Rural life in Texas
2
~ Between 1846 and 1860, the number of farms grew from 12,000 to almost 43,000 when nearly all Texans lived on farms or ranches. Land was inexpensive and available, so many Texans farmed or raised cattle on their own land rather than working for someone else. One of the largest food crop and was a major part of Texans' diet was corn. Wheat, oats, and sweet potatoes were some other food crops.
~ The primary cash crop in Texas was cotton which could be shipped to Europe and Northern States.
~ Most farmers raised milk cows, chickens, and hogs to provide food. Many Texans began raising livestock for profit during the 1850's. They started ranches where they raised herds of cattle and sheep for wool.
