Dorothea Dix- was born on April 4th, 1802.
She was horrified by jails housing mentally ill people.
In 1843 she sent a report of her findings to the legislature, who passed a law that improved conditions.
1845-1852 Dix persuaded southern states to set up public hospitals for mentally ill.
She died on July 17th, 1887.
