Church's Role

The Church dominated life in feudal society. In addition to paying and giving service to feudal lords, peasants provided tax and service to the Medieval Church. The Church had significant wealth and held much land in Medieval Europe. It was the social center of society at the time, as all had to obey laws (canon law). Peasants who disobeyed these laws could be excommunicated and nobles who opposed the church could face an interdict (order excluding town, region or kingdom of
noble).
