The Code of Hammurabi states, " 4. If he has borne false witness in a civil law case, he shall pay the damages in that suit, 15. If a man has induced either a male or a female slave from the house of a patrician, or plebeian, to leave the city, he shall be put to death, and 18. If such a slave will not name his owner, his captor shall bring him to the palace, where he shall be examined as to his past and returned to his owner."
