Writing

Cuneiform writing, is the basis of the writing system. Even though cuneiform writing is not used today, but cuneiform writing was the first step in the development of the writing system. The Babylonians used cuneiform to keep track of financial records as tax records, trade and commerce receipts. Also, cuneiform writing allowed individuals to write letters and other ego-documents that historians can use to find out about their inner lives. This invention of writing helped the Babylonians to keep up with their complex societies. Also, the writing system helped to record their spiritual and social events. Their literature and history was also noted down using cuneiform. At first, the cuneiform writing was used from conveying simple nouns. Cuneiform became a language of many thousands of abstract characters that were linear lines pressed into clay tablets. Cuneiform was started by the Sumerians in the fourth millennium BCE. Sumerian scribes began to write their earliest form of cuneiform as pictographs.
Some of what the Code of Hammurabi says is: "1. If any one ensnare another, putting a ban upon him, but he can not prove it, then he that ensnared him shall be put to death.
11. If the owner do not bring witnesses to identify the lost article, he is an evil-doer, he has traduced, and shall be put to death.
22. If any one is committing a robbery and is caught, then he shall be put to death."
