Distinguishing Features, Habitat, Skeleton, and Feeding Pattern.
- Lampreys have no jaw. They are vampiric, meaning they suck the blood of other creatures to survive.
- As we can see by the diagram on my right, lampreys have circle mouths with razor-sharp teeth. These help the tiny beasts cling onto their victims. They are also serpentine.
In terms of their environment, lampreys are anadromous, meaning they can live in fresh and saltwater with equal ease.
- As we can see, the Lampreys' skeleton is actually rather complex, especially for such a small animal. One thing to point out, though, is that it does not have true vertebrae, which is why some scientists do not consider the lamprey (or hagfish) a member of Phylum Chordata. It has a cartilaginous "skull," which also makes it a bit of a Cartiliginous Fish.
- They feed by latching onto their prey with their sucker-cup like mouth, and can spend hours, days, and even weeks on a single host, and in some cases will even suck their prey dry and when that happens, they leave, fattened on their prey's life essence.
