When they get to the mountain they look at the sun setting. They then turn around and see a dark shadow in front of them. The dark shadow is called the dark thing and they find out that this is what the Murrys father is fighting. Calvin, Charles, and Meg are afraid of this dark shadow and don't know why. They know instantly that it is evil.
