In the mid 1800s most people lived on farms or ranches. Corn was the largest food crop in TX and played a major roll in Texans diet. Cotton was the primary cash crop in TX and other southern states. Sugarcane was also a cash crop. Raising livestock was an easy way to make money and to get food.
