Education
Even though Lamar had set aside land for schools, little progress had been made. No public system of education existed when TX became a state. Most children went to privet schools, or were homeschooled. In 1854 governor Pease signed a law that set aside $2 million for a special school fund. Even with the money few public schools were established. The permanent school fund was established in 1876, and is now worth more than $20 billion.
