Asoka the Great

~Asoka was Chandragupta's grandson. He became ruler of the Maurya Empire in 268 BC.
~Asoka came to power of the Maurya Empire after his grandfather died.
~However, Asoka did not agree with the way his grandfather ruled.
~He decided to convert the empire to a Buddhist empire. From then on, Buddhism became the center of Asoka's life.
~With the belief in Buddhism comes a responsibility to act with morality not violence. Asoka was moral because he practiced religious tolerance, and sent missionaries to spread the message of Buddhism.
~Asoka's had a series of laws that were dominated by Buddhist

principles. The laws, which were written in Sanskrit, Greek, and Aramic, were known in over thirty places in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nepal.
~Asoka's rule was peaceful and successful.
