8% of the total land area of the hotspot is protected. Only 7.3% of the hotspot is protected in IUCN categories; this is protected in hunting reserves which give protection and resource management. Most of the land is government owned which means it protected easily and quickly. A transboundary project between Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Russia are in plans.
