Commercial Logging
Most deforestation has occurred in the last 3 decades due to commercial logging, major agricultural projects, and large-scale agriculture. Some threats to the forests are illegal and unsustainable logging and non timber forest product extraction, fueled by high demand from China, NA, Europe, and Japan.
Wildlife Trade
One of the biggest threats against the Sundalands biodiversity is the wildlife trade. Many species, including orangutans, numbers were reduced due to the trade. Other animals involved in the trade are tigers, rhinoceros, turtles, snakes, pangolins, bears, monkeys, etc. There is high demand in the Chinese medicine market for skins, body parts, and horns.
