Protect Sundaland

12% of the total land area of the hotspot is protected. Only 5.2% of the hotspot is protected in IUCN categories; the more diverse and important lowland forests are under represented in the protected areas systems and are vulnerable to agricultural and timber development. In 2004, the Indonesian government made a commitment to create 12 new protected areas to help preserve Sundaland.
