The first new religious order was founded by Ignatius of Loyola. This new order was the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits. They served the pope and the church. They tried to be disciplined as soldiers. Their goals were to teach people about Catholic ideas. They hoped that strong Catholic education would turn people against Protestant ideas.
The Council of Trent was created because more change was needed. This council is when clergy from across Europe meet to discuss, debate, and reform Catholic teachings. They met three times. This led to major reforms in the Roman Catholic Church.
