Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis started in 1962. The Soviet Union began placing nuclear missiles in Cuba. The United States felt threatened by this and refused to allow Cuba to hold nuclear missiles. After many negotiations, the U.S. agreed to remove missiles from Italy and Turkey in return for the removal of missiles in Cuba. This was considered the closest that the United States and the Soviet Union came to fighting a nuclear war in the Cold War.
