What Can Humans Do?

•When fishermen leave fishing nets and other materials in coral reefs, Hawaiian monk seals get entangled in them. Some eventually get rescued, but many are dead when found and some are never discovered. This can also be easily prevented if fishermen were more careful and cleaned up after themselves, instead of littering the ocean with trash and other debris.
•Since Hawaiian monk seals are easily disturbed creatures, they will often move their pups to unsafe parts of a beach if they encounter human activity. This choice results in a decline of pup survival, which leads to less adult monk seals to produce more offspring. This could easily be prevented if people were more observant and would check to see if there were any Hawaiian monk seals nearby before they decided to go to a certain spot on a beach.
