Description

Thor's Battle Against the Jötnar, by Mårten Eskil Winge, 1872

Analyze

Interpret

The muscular and mighty god of thunder, Thor, is at war with the Jötnar. Utilizing his hammer, he summons thunder in order to keep his enemy at bay.

19th Century Art

Choosing to paint the figures around Thor a darker color provides a contrast which helps to keep him the focal point.

The shading in the arms of the figures make it seem realistic.

The decision of painting Thor standing on a chair helps show that he is the dominant figure and all others are inferior.

The reason why this painting is so dynamic is impart to the many illusions of movement throughout the piece.

I believe Winge painted this to show the might of Thor. In Norse mythology, Thor is described to be invincible and this piece captures that.
