The Great Sphinx of Giza, Egyptian, 2500 B.C.
Analyze:
Interpret:
Made out of different types of limestone, the immense Sphinx lies south of Pharoah Khafre's pyramid.
The texture seems to be rough and bumpy after centuries of erosion.
The head appears to be smaller in proportion to the rest of its body.
The Sphinx is symmetrical, which causes balance.
The shapes in the Sphinx were carefully carved out which is why it appears geometric.
In Egyptian times, sphinxes were viewed as guardians. In this case, the Great Sphinx of Giza serves as a guardian for Pharoah's Khafre's tomb.
