Giverny Reflections
By Richard Harpum, 2012
Describe
-composed of flowering bushes and tall, thick tress; emerald bridge over a reflective river spotted with lily pads
-organic shapes, implied shapes, complex shapes, simple shapes
-tree leaves make implied lines; many vertical lines in large drooping tree
Analyze
-unified by the color green
-sky acts as a negative shape
- eyes first drawn to the people dressed in white; pulled to the right by the bridge then down by its reflection; led to the left by the larger tree's reflection and finally guided back up to the large tree itself by the vertical lines
-darker green on the right half while lighter greens on the left half; makes the people the center if the two
Interpret
The artist is communicating how nature is beautiful in many way shapes and forms by making such complex designs for the vegetation
The artist is also showing how small we are and how enormous and incredible Mother Nature is by keeping the people white and a simple shape while the surrounding nature is colorful and uses many shapes.
