Transportation in Texas wasn't the best at the time, but was improving greatly. Most people rode horses, mules, oxen, and if the didn't have any, they would walk. Most of the river, except the Rio Grande, couldn't be rafted on since they were not very clear. East, the rivers were more bigger and clearer, allowing much easier travel by water. There was the Butterfield line, in Northern Texas, which could cary much more freight and people than average cart. Trains started appearing around the 1850's and 60's in Texas. They first appeared in Galveston and Houston.
