When Texas became a state, there was no public form of education, even the President Lamar set back lots of land for schools and universities. The only way kids and adults alike could get education was if they went to a private school. Governor Elisha M. Pease set aside $2,000,000 for schools, but nothing really happened until 1876 when the state set aside a school budget that is now $20,000,000,000.
