Building An Empire

When the Aztecs went South all the good farm land was taken so they went to a swampy island in the middle of Lake Texcoco. To increase their power they had wars. They also formed a secret alliance with people on Lake Texcoco.

The people they conquered had too pay taxes like gold, cotton, or food. They controlled this trade system. Merchants were used as spies because they traveled so much and they brought goods to the Aztecs. Because they controlled all this they became rich.
