Cuban missile crisis

During the Cuban Missile Crisis, an American plane flew over Cuba and discovered nuclear missile sites under construction by the USSR. Kennedy debated the crisis with a group of officials for the next two weeks on weather to have a military solution, such as an invasion or air strikes, or a diplomatic solution to remove the missiles. Finally Kennedy ordered a naval blockade of Cuba, before Khrushchev withdrew the weapons. This was the closest the world has come to a nuclear war.
