Rivalry between the USSR and the u.s.
The Soviet Union promoted the ideology of communism, which had a planned economy and a one-party state. In contrast, the United States promoted the ideologies of liberal democracy and the free market. Because of these differences countries in Europe had to choose a side, creating a bipolar balance of power, half supporting the NATO with the US or the Warsaw Pact members involved in the Soviet Union.
