23 states were involved in civil war. Most of the states that had been involved were southern states and states on the east coast. There were very few if any states on the west coast were involved with the battles.

The battles fought were quite deadly and thousands of soldiers died fighting in them not only from explosions or gun shots or anyway of murder, but disease as well. The areas of the battle were never safe and could spread illnesses.
