How is food broken down further?
Now the ball of chewed up apple has reached the stomach. The stomach is a digestive organ with thick muscular walls. When the stomach is empty it has folds that resembles wrinkles. When the stomach fills up with food, the folds expand and smooth out. The stomach can hold more than a liter when it is full. The wall of the stomach has glands that produce chemicals, such as acids, that break down food. It also contains mucus that keeps food moist and slippery.
