Most of the Mayans belonged to the lower class. They lived in small houses out side the city. Girls learned from their mothers and cared for children. Men made tools and provided the family with food. They had gardens and worked in fields.
Farmers had to give some of their crops to their rulers and lower class Mayans paid them. They also served in army and if captured became a slave. They were the lowest position. Slave's children and people with debts also became slaves. The upper class also held religious ceremonies for the slaves.
