Rural Life in Texas
Nearly all Texans lived on farms or ranches between 1846 and 1860 because the land was inexpensive. Many farmers focused on growing crops but few farmers were able to to make much of a profit. Cotton was the primary cash crop as it was in the other Southern states. Raising livestock continued to be an important aspect of farming in Texas, but the importance of ranching grew in the 1850s.
