Definition: A translocation mutation is when a chromosomal segment is moved from one place to another, either within the same chromosome or to another.

Example: Translocation Down syndrome is a rare form of Down syndrome. This occurs when part of chromosome 21 is translocation onto another chromosome before at after conception. People with Translocation Down syndrome have two copies of chromosome 21, but they also have extra material from chromosome 21 attached to the translocation chromosome.
