An educator and reformer who led many other reform for the welfare of mentally ill people.Saw terribly conditions in a prison she taught Sunday school at and made her want to open up mental hospitals. She believed the treatment and care for the mentally ill were extremely important to be handled. They needed to be taught not punished. Her hard work and constant efforts for justice resulted in over 32 mental institutions to open across the US. Was named superintendent of nurses during the Civil War while volunteering her time.
