Major Leaders in Education reform

> Rejected Calvinism and wanted to focus on his education instead

> Graduated from Brown University

> purpose was to bring school districts under authority and achieve unity 

> hoped that children with a better education would come out of poverty and become good citizens

> Worked with other reformed to focus on what children would be taught in school and helped put together programs for their teachers to have better educations as well

> Taxes began going towards schools and teacher training/workshops

> Women had slightly more options to be educated 

> African Americans also began to have education options but had to attend schools separate from whites

> Established the Massachusetts Board of Education in 1837

> Wanted to accomplish three objective during his run as president of the State Senate:

1. state collection of education data

2. state adoption of textbooks through the establishment of state-approved school libraries in each district

3. state control of teacher preparation through the establishment of "Normal schools" (teacher colleges)
