Why were bodies preserved?

The Ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife after death, and they thought that they needed their body to face the obstacles that were described in the book of life. They carefully preserved the bodies so that the soul could identify its body and gain repossession of it once again. Once they have weighed the hearts and passed all the obstacles, they travel into paradise, with fields of grain.
