In 1821 Emma opened up the nations first academically rigorous schools for girls in Troy, New York. Willard's school prospered and was a model for a new type of women's school.
In 1837 She overcame a heated resistance to found another important institution of higher learning for women. Mount Holyoke Female Seninary, later to be known as Mount Holyoke College.
Opened a school for girls in Canterbury, Connecticut in 1831. Two years later she admitted an African American girl, but the towns people protested against desegregated education so she decided to admit only African American students.
