Until the 1820s American girls had few educational avenues open to them beyond elementary school. In 1821 one of the nations first academically rigorous schools for girls in Troy, New York opened. This school became a model for a new type of women schools. In 1837 mount Holyoke female seminary was founded in south Bailey Massachusetts. In the same year Ohio's Oberlin College admitted four women to its degree program making it the first coeducational college.
