Pro-Slavery Arguments

Although slavery was declining in America, many people still supported the ideal of slaves and slave trading.

-The Virginia Debate: 73 to 58 vote; slavery was kept due to 73 people who voted for it in the Virginia debate. There were more eastern slave holders than western slave holders within the state.

-Pro-Slavery citizens argued the freedom of slaves was unbiblical. They interpreted the bible to show that all servants must follow and respect their masters, and if they did not, it was against Christianity.

-Slaveholders told the myth of the "happy slave." They told courts and anti-slavery citizens their slaves were treated respectfully, which was, in fact, not the case.
