Due to her personal experience visiting the Massachusetts House of Correction, she was prompted to become a strong force within the prison and asylum reform. She became the women who lead the reforms, and helped pass a law in 1843 to improve the conditions in jails. Mentally ill hospitals became more common due to her effort.
