Title: The kiss

Artist: Francesco Hayez

Meduim: Painting - Oil On Canvas

Description: The Kiss, 1859 (oil on canvas) by Hayez, Francesco (1791-1882)

Provenance: Currently in America

Source: <a href='http://fineartamerica.com/featured/the-kiss-francesco-hayez.html' size='20'><img src='http://fineartamerica.com/displayartwork.html?id=1748092&width=250&height=310' alt='Sell Art Online' title='Sell Art Online' style='border: none;'></a>

Description:

-a woman in a silk blue dress

-a man in red pants and cloak

-both embracing each other and kissing

-background kind of old and dull

Analysis:

-organic shapes are the people

-shadowing of the people and on the wall

-value in lighting on the clothes and in the background

-positive space: people

-negative space: walls and stairs

-movement: eyes are drawn to the middle but not much going on around the image

-primary colors blue, yellow, and red

-contrast from light on the wall to darkness

-emphasis point on the couple kissing

Interpretation:

There is a couple kissing at the Bolton of the steps that look like a castle, and are dresses as if they are from the Renaissance. The kissing shows that they have feelings for one another and expresses a relationship.

Judgement:

I thought this piece was kind of dull in the negative space but the positive space showed a lot of chemistry between the two people. My eyes were drawn to the center where the couple are kissing.
