The whole point of The Underground Railroad was to get slaves to the north. In the North slaves could be free. Some free states were Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Ohio, yet after 1850 the Congress passed a law called The Fugitive Slave Act. The law stated that even in free states people had to return runaway slaves. Therefore the slaves began going all the way Canada to be a free person.
