THE FOUNDING OF JAMESTOWN
--In 1606 king James I granted a charter to colonize the new world—specifically the territory of Virginia– this was a joint stock company funded by the Virginia Company of London
--Their goal for this colony was to demonstrate English power, spread Christianity & civilize the native Americans
--Most importantly they went in search of gold
--In 1606 100 men set sail and on may 24, 1607 their ship landed in the Chesapeake bay territory– they then founded Jamestown the first English colony in the new world
