The old ways of European life were present if the new world Colonies
The social structure was like a pyramid with few wealthy and many poor
The New England colonies generally met frequently in social settings because the social scenes were centered around cities
Without advance systems of roads the southern colonies had few opportunities for social interactions
The upper class: these were the wealthy and elite men who were educated and had the right to both vote and hold office
The middle class: these men owned small farms and businesses and belonged to a skilled profession. These men had the right to vote and a few held office
The Lower class: these men worked as manual laborers or apprentices they were mostly illiterate and could not vote or hold office
Indentured servants: these men were provided with free passage to the new world and in return they would work for free as servants for roughly 7 years--they had very few rights
At the bottom were the slaves
