• Book 2, chapter three- clear representation of Orwells perspective of women’s ability to affect change, contrast between this and the role of the male protagonist.
• Julia's first sexual encounter was with a 60 year old man of the Party when she was just sixteen, and the man committed suicide as a result of his crime, primary source of power that women hold: their sexuality.
• Winston then describes his desire to kill his wife, ultimately decides because of the lack of power that women hold in rebellion, that whether she died or not would have no influence over the affecting of change.
• "When you make love you're using up energy; and afterwards you feel happy and don't give a damn for anything. They can't bear you to feel like that. They want you to be bursting with energy all the time. All this marching up and down and cheering and waving flags is simply sex gone sour. If you're happy inside yourself, why should you get excited about Big Brother and the Three-Year Plans and the Two Minutes Hate and all the rest of their bloody rot?"
