WOMEN
Whilst at the time of composition this perspective of women may have been a societal norm, a current interpretation of the text could be one of misogyny and suppression of women in a patriarchal society. This interpretation can significantly change how the text relates to the perspectives of women explored in Metropolis; at the time that 1984 was created, Orwell’s view of women as sexual objects aligns with the majority of females represented in Metropolis, and enhances the contrasting affect of Maria’s purity. Disparately, when viewing the texts through the lens of a 21st century society, Orwell’s text provides a limiting and male chauvinist type view of the potential for women to affect change. In this way, the context of the audience can significantly change how the text is viewed, and how this connects with other texts of the genre.
