The gun that Mark Chapman used to kill John Lennon was a Charter Arms .38 Special revolver. He fired five times from a "combat stance" with the first bullet sailing over Lennon's head and hitting a window of the Dakota building. The next four struck Lennon in the back, with two on the left side and two in his left shoulder. The hollow point bullets caused damage to the blood vessels above and around Lennon's heart, and his cause of death was determined to be hypovolemic shock due to extreme blood loss.
