CASE 3

The Chris Vaughn Murder

On June 14th, 2007 Christopher Vaughn pulled his SUV off of interstate 55 onto an isolated frontage road near Channahon. He told his family that it was a surprise trip to Springfield water park. Instead when he pulled off of the road he stuck the barrel of his handgun under the chin of his wife, Kimberly, (34) then turned around on his three sleeping children Abigayle, (12) Cassandra, (11) and Blake (8) who raised his arms in self defense. Each of the children was shot once in the head and once in the chest. He then stood with a passerby who called 911 until police arrived and apparently had a gunshot wound to his thigh. He answered questions and initially claimed to be the victim of a drive by shooting, but then changed his story to blame his wife for the killings and said that she then killed herself. He was arrested two days later, found guilty, and is serving four consecutive life sentences. He said that he wanted to live a free life in the Canadian wilderness and decided this was the way to do it.
