The Mesopotamians took advantage of the annual flooding.  Farmers built canals to take water from one of the two main rivers and fertilized their crops with it.  They also used irrigation systems to control the flooding.  The flooding produced silt which is another name for richly fertilized soil.  The farmers planted apples, figs, onions, cucumbers, wheat, and barley.
