Mesopotamian writing was called cuneiform and was mainly developed by the Sumerians. Some of the worlds greatest poems also known as epic poems were writing from Mesopotamia.  They used writing mainly to keep record of trade with other early civilizations.  Writing was mostly done by kings and priests.  Few boys knew how to write and rarely ever a girl.
