The Pokemon seasons are currently on the 17th season. This season introduced many new Pokemon as well as characters. Let's go back to the very first season. In the first season of Pokemon, our main character, Ash, arrives at prof. Oaks lab late. So late that when he gets there, all of the starter Pokemon have already been picked. Ash begs Oak to give him a Pokemon. He ends up giving Ash a Pokemon called pikachu. Once letting this Pokemon out, Ash finds out that this pikachu doesn't like being in a pokeball. Once they found that out, Oak told Ash if he where to travel with that Pokemon he would have to let it stay out of its pokeball.
