In Chapters 22-24, Catherine begins visiting Wuthering Heights to see Linton because Heathcliff convinced her to have a guilty conscience by saying Linton is dying of a broken heart. She visits Linton with Nelly and he whines the whole time and gets in an argument with Cathy; she pushes him, and after he has a long coughing and screaming fit, she feels bad and says she'll come again. (Which Nelly doesn't not want her doing) Nelly gets a cold on the way home, and Cathy looks out for her as well as her father and goes and visits Linton at night. On the way there she is stopped by Hareton who tries to prove he can read by reading his name on the gate, but he can not read the rest and Cathy calls him a dunce. She then goes in and talks to Linton when Hareton soon comes in and kicks Linton out. Linton becomes sick, and Hareton soon lets him in to help. Cathy continues to sneak out to help Linton heal. Nelly finds out about Cathy sneaking out and she tells Edgar, who forbids her from going to Wuthering Heights. She is only permitted to write letters or for him to visit.
