Cathy sneaking away to visit her dying cousin and falling in love with him adds to the theme of a"gothic romance". We experience Lintons sickness in chapters 23-24 and it helps us to see how immature he is and to learn more about his charachter. We also see the unhealthy relationship that Cathy and Linton have, and it doesn't not help their relatives to accept their romance. The fact that Cathy is sneaking away as to the suspense in the book and the rising action.
