The “hypocrisy” that people will never admit is that they have an appetite for sex and violence. Protecting this part of the psyche from shock will eventually get boring and consequently people will try to seek exciting stimulations.
Some theorists believe that shock of art and mass media are cathartic, that is, enable fears and repressed emotions such as aggression and lust to be released in a safe condition.
